Fly Fish The Yucatán Peninsula

Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge opened its doors on January 1996 and has quickly become one of the Yucatan’s most popular fishing destinations and with good reason. The lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an (Mayan for “where the sky is born”) Biosphere Reserve. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. To the east lies the blue Caribbean and a few hundred yards off shore, the Palancar Barrier Reef which stretches from southern Belize to north of Cancun. On the western side lies the vast “El Rio” system of flats, channels and mangrove. 10 miles to the north is the famed inlet through the barrier beach known locally as the “Boca”. And 4 miles to the south lies the incomparable Ascension Bay. The entire area boasts some of the Caribbean’s greatest flats fishing for bonefish, excellent fishing for permit fishing for snook, fishing for tarpon and other species.

Non-Angling Activities

  • Wild Dolphin Tour in Sian Ka’an –For the nature lovers, the Wild Dolphin Tour to Sian Ka’an is like experiencing a tropical paradise. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is home to a variety of rare and spectacular creatures including dolphins, manatees, tropical fish and hundreds of species of exotic birds.

  • Eco-Tours – Sian Ka’an (Maya for “Where the sky is born”) was established as a biosphere reserve in 1986 and incorporated into UNESCO’s list of natural world heritage sites in 1987. Adjacent to its southern border, the area for protection of flora and Fauna UYAMIL was established in 1994. Covering together over 1.5 million acres along the central coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, they comprise one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. The Sian Kaan reserve is composed equally of semi evergreen tropical forest, wetlands and savannas, and marine habitat with coral reefs. Sian Ka’an is home to more than 345 species of birds, including over one million wintering migratory song birds from the U.S. and Canada and the rare Jabiru Stork. All of the endangered cat species of southern Mexico are found in Sian Ka’an, including jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and the jaguarundi, along with spider and howler monkeys, white-tipped and collared peccary and tapir. The wetlands and marine habitats shelter the endangered Morelet’s and American crocodile as well as manatee and provides habitat for the green, loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles. Small dolphins groups swim, feed and reproduce in Ascension and Espiritu Santo Bay.
  • Snorkeling  – There are many opportunities to discover the underwater world. Snorkeling is one of the easiest, safest and most delightful to explore the aquatic wilderness. For those who have snorkeled once or twice in the past, maybe you just put your mask on and jump in the water and for the next 40 minutes you are more busy trying to be comfortable, than actually looking at the show. With a few tips and little practice I have seen almost anyone become a competent snorkeler. We will give you a personalized training to make sure you can relax and enjoy. The aim of our program is not only to admire whatever is there, but to learn one or two things about it. During the week we will be looking for a number of species to get a good photo collection.
  • Diving – The boundaries of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve include 110km of the second largest barrier reef in the world, which extends onward past Belize and Honduras. The reef is home to many important and several endangered species and is completely untouched by divers or touristic activities. The reserve contains three large core zones where human activity is limited by permission for scientific research. These areas, known as the Zonas Nucleares of Muyil, Cayo Culebras, and Uaymil, cover a total area of almost 700,000 acres. Low-impact human activities and sustainable development occur in the area of the reserve. Pesca Maya is the only operation in the Sian Kaan bio preserve with a permission to dive the local reefs. The adventure of exploring an untouched natural environment is a unique experience that you will never forget.

Internet / Communications
There is basic wi-fi access in the lodge but not the guest rooms. The wi-fi is accessed through very basic satellite connection, so don’t expect to be able to catch up on your latest shows. The wi-fi strength is good enough to check a few urgent emails. But isn’t that the whole point, to get away from all the noise? There is a satellite phone for emergency situations. Direct dial telephone service is readily available 24 hours a day in the office area of the lodge building.

FISHING

General Information
In Ascencion Bay there are hundreds of square miles of crystal clear flats where it’s common to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and jacks or barracuda in the same day, all year round! Sight fishing for bonefish in skinny water, wading over a white sand bottom, look for permit in shallow flats just two or three feet deep or fish from the boat in a mangroove lagoon where tarpon are rolling. You will find the consistency of bonefishing, the exitement of fishing for tarpon, the thrilling challenge of fishing for permit, the nice surprice of jack crevalle or fishing for snook and the fierce strike of “cudas” on a clear flat. Fishing for permit in the so-called “permit Mekka” of the Caribbean is the ultimate dream of the avid saltwater angler.

Boats and Equipment

The boats are locally made fiber glass “pangas”, with a Yamaha 40 HP outboard motor. Boats are well suited for fly-fishing, with a spacious and clean platform. They are comfortable to run across Ascension Bay, even in the rough days and with only 6 inches in the water we can get into any flat.

All boats are equipped with with VHF radios and safety equipment.
